Is anyone familiar with this that happened with Oprah and KFC?

I’m not sure why Mike wrote, in bold, “Oprah is not a proponent of factory farming.” Has anyone checked in on her moral compass lately—assuming you believe she’s ever had one? I call hers busted at best.

Oprah likes to be popular. Giving away free cheap food during a recession makes that happen for her. It’s nothing but publicity, though a shameful display by little miss I-build-schools-in-Africa who thinks giving away cars doesn’t negate her good deeds. Ugh. Her whole empire is rickety crap.

There are a bunch of stories here following it: http://consumerist.com/search/oprah/byrelevance/?timerange=month.

I’m not surprised at all. Oprah portrayed veganism as a cleanse. Cleanses aren’t meant to last.

“The Oprah Effect” strikes again! KFC isn’t the first to be overwhelmed by an Oprah mention. CNBC is airing a documentary about her power and influence called “The Oprah Effect” on Thursday, May 28th 9p ET | 10P PT.

Yeah I caught the episode. Basically KFC already had a deal for a free meal on their website to promote their grilled chicken and they contacted the folks over at Harpo who thought it would be a great idea to collaborate with KFC. You had to go to the oprah website within 24 hours and print out the coupon.

I think that Oprah’s statement after the fact shows her true level of awareness. She sounds like a doe-eyed little kid who doesn’t know why or how they go in trouble. I won’t venture to quote her directly right now but it was something along the lines of “I just wanted to give everyone a free meal in these tough economic times” (once again not a direct quote). No matter how many shows she has done recently on factory farming, puppy mills or her vegan “cleanse” she still hasn’t made the connection. Then again, I never really expected her to.

What I did find really disturbing is that on her “Friday’s Live” Show one of the panelist jokingly mentioned that this was a really bad time to be a chicken and how horrible this must be for the chickens. It gave everyone all of a two second pause and Oprah just uncomfortably chuckled and said “yeah”.

I have to say I was sad that Oprah was promoting such bad fast food…I mean if she had to promote eating chicken at least choose Boston Market.

    Ingredients of the “Grilled” Chicken:
Fresh Chicken Marinated with: Salt, Sodium Phosphate, and Monosodium Glutamate Seasoned with: Maltodextrin, Salt, Bleached Wheat Flour, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and Cottonseed Oil, Monosodium Glutamate, Spices, Palm Oil, Natural Flavor, Garlic Powder, Soy Sauce (Soybean, Wheat, Salt), Chicken Fat, Chicken Broth, Autolyzed Yeast, Beef Powder, Rendered Beef Fat, Extractives of Turmeric, Dehydrated Carrot, Onion Powder, and Not More Than 2% Each of Calcium Silicate and Silicon Dioxide Added as Anticaking Agents. Contains Wheat and Soy.

MSG, cottonseed oil and everything. This isn’t food, it’s science. Even when I ate meat, grilling didn’t require much. Way to promote healthy living.

    • Funny how they let people allergic to soy and wheat, know that their chicken meal contains soy and wheat… as if the other stuff in the ingredients list are things people aren’t allergic to and or get sick by, such as MSG and huge amounts of table salt and chickens pumped with antibiotics and hormones. Strange!

I saw this post and I had to respond. They flavor that chicken with rendered beef fat? Who is the Colonel trying to fool? It’s just as bad (based on the ingredients-including MSG) as the fried chicken. I know times are hard, and people are looking for a bargain, so I can’t fault them. I haven’t had the Colonel’s chicken in about 9 years, and I am sure NOT going back.
    Peace.

I read about that on Facebook a week ago and was pretty disappointed in the Oprah show…Considering that she did the factory farming special sometime back (and KFC’s practices in animal cruelty), I wouldn’t think she’d do business with them…

    “This isn’t food, it’s science.” I’m lost.

well granted the culinary arts is a science, but grilled chicken shouldn’t be this difficult for it to have flavor.

the chicken is soaked in a brine of sodium and msg THEN slapped with more msg in the seasoning. if this is grilled chicken, why would you need to flavor it with chicken fat and chicken broth (both fat rendering) then beef powder (wtf) and beef fat i guess to give it a grilled taste or something, plus 3 types of oil, unlisted spices and ‘natural flavor’. this chicken was lab tested and approved. this isn’t a season and slap on the grill.
if this was honest carcass home cooking- it would have less fat and lower sodium content.

I’m glad it wasn’t just me that was like “HUH???” at that. For someone who is FOREVER talking about dieting and being healthy. What, Oprah??? Fast Food does not factor into “dieting” and “being healthy” no matter how you try to work it.
