I want to believe that this Craig’s List Ad is a Hoax. I have no words for this. It has to be a hoax, no?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will be featuring a video on PETA.org in mid-January 2010 called the “State of the Union Undress.” This video will feature an attractive woman dressed in business attire proudly and powerfully reciting a speech, which will be approximately five minutes long about PETA’s hard work for animals in 2009 (she will be able to read from a teleprompter during filming). It is meant to be a parody of President Obama’s state of the union address, but instead of being about America’s progress, it will be about PETA’s progress. As the woman reads the script, she will begin removing articles of clothing until she is completely naked. It will be a sexy video with a powerful message. Full frontal nudity will be shown on this video (by the end of the video, the woman will have no bra or underwear on). We’ve done similar videos in the past and have achieved incredible success, including coverage on Fox News and hundreds of online outlets.

We have found that people do pay more attention to our racier actions, and we consider the public’s attention to be extremely important. Part of our job is to shake people up and even shock them in order to initiate discussion, debate, questioning of the status quo, and of course, action. The current situation is critical for billions of animals, and because it is our duty to continue drawing attention to the plight of animals abused in the meat, clothing, experimentation, and entertainment industries, we are willing to use all legal means at our disposal in ways that will capture the public’s imagination. Our goal is to make the public think about the issues. Although some consider our projects that include nudity to be controversial, many express support for these tactics.

Requirements for the actor:
1) She must be vegan or vegetarian and supportive of PETA’s work.
2) She must be 18 or older with a valid ID.
3) She must be African American or mixed race. The goal is to have her ethnicity resemble Barack Obama’s as closely as possible.
4) She must be willing to be completely nude on camera and know that the full frontal nudity scenes will be publicized on PETA.org and possibly reposted on hundreds of other media outlets.
5) She must be capable of a fun, sexy, and easy flowing performance and be excited about the animal rights message.
6) She must be fully aware that we will be pitching this video to many media outlets and be eager to represent PETA.
7) She must be available to film sometime in mid-December in Los Angeles (we will discuss specific dates once an actor is chosen). The filming will be at a private studio where the actor will work with a professional crew of men and women, including a female PETA staffer who will be there to assist her.

To Apply:
Please e-mail a photo (preferably both a head shot and a full body shot) to the “reply to” e-mail address above (send as attachment, preferably JPG format). Please include answers to the following questionnaire in the e-mail body:

Name:
Age:
Race:
City in which you currently reside:
E-mail address:
Phone number:
Are you vegetarian or vegan?
Do you have any concerns about going completely nude in this video?
Do you have your own transportation?

Do you have any other thoughts/comments?

Only submissions with clear photos attached will be considered. If desired, we can also refrain from publishing the actor’s name.

  • Compensation: The video will receive massive media coverage online and probably on television news outlets as well. Fox News has picked up previous versions of this video. As a nonprofit organization, it’s difficult for us to pay the actor in money, but we can assure her that we’ll do everything we can to pitch and publicize the video to make her as well known as possible. If desired, we can also refrain from publishing the actor’s name.

    again, I will highlight:

This is the one part that actually makes me think it could be a hoax. PETA has a $30 million operating budget! They have no excuse for not paying someone; it’s pure exploitation.

If I can be really cynical for a moment, for the last two “undress” videos, the white women in them were probably staffers already on the payroll. But since PETA is so white, they couldn’t find a Black woman there who would do it. Hence the craigslist ad. Maybe they fear a line item for “naked actress” would be hard to justify under their 501(c)3 status.

      • Pricks Exploiting and Tricking Activists Says:

No, I believe PETA would in fact say this to cheat the person out of financial compensation. The first and last time I did anything with PETA was when took part in a protest involving civil disobedience with the understanding that PETA would pay any fines resulting from the action.

As a result of the CD I was charged with trespassing and later plead no contest – as PETA advised. As a result I was given a significant fine. When I contacted PETA to be get the fine payed, PETA attempted to stick me with the fines by saying in effect: We’re a nonprofit organization, and we don’t have any money to pay fines for civil disobedience.

I insisted that PETA hold up its agreement, but I also realized that this was an organization that exploits activists and can’t be trusted. I’m sure many others have been put in the same spot and PETA got away with using them.

“incredible success, including coverage on Fox News and hundreds of online outlets”

I don’t actually think, tactically, that more coverage automatically equals “incredible success.” (& success in what? Alienating more members of the public? Convincing more women/more POCs that PETA is full of shit?)

    GROSS.

    • Wendy Says:

      ugh, agreed.
getting your ad on fox news is success??
I can only imagine what they then say about animal rights “terorrists,” which is then regurgitated by at least half of the uneducated middle class public.

  4. I think this is a hoax. I really do. Am trying to verify this. I can’t imagine FOX News would cover a PETA ad.

    • johanna Says:

Yeah… although it’s funny how spot-on the tone is for PETA, & how believable it is that it could be them.

I could believe FOX would cover PETA to trash them, easily…

      • Noah Says:

Looks like PETA VP Lisa Lange was on Bill O’Reilly — an anti-woman match made in heaven, I suppose.

It has hoax written all over it…and that’s exactly why I think it’s real! Classic PETA.

I saw some PETA literature at a local vegan society event over the weekend. I didn’t say anything to the organizer because I know she doesn’t support PETA, and I was just surprised and confused as to its presence. But I will see if we can get an official group ban on all PETA literature because this has to stop.

Last year’s state of undress was featured on O’Reilly:

  5. Julia Says:

This does seem like a hoax.

  6. vegadelic Says:

Easy way to find out–just call Peta and ask.

  7. Meep Says:

Instead of being outraged, we should just laugh at PETA. Basically, lolpeta.

  8. Jessica Says:

    Hey everyone,

I think it’s real. The link is posted as a tweet on the official peta twitter account (http://www.twitter.com/officialpeta) from November 23:

@vegetarianstar Actor needed 2 participate in this year’s “State of the Union Undress?” http://ow.ly/EXk3 RT?

  9. adam Says:

I was told by a PETA staff-member that “I don’t see anything in there that would make me doubt the legitimacy of it,” though there was uncertainty as to who would have posted it.

Obviously, Patricia Hill Collins and bell hooks are not exactly on PETA’s Christmas reading list. I suppose, at least, they’re not putting anyone in blackface (which wouldn’t be all that surprising at this point).

  10. If this is not a hoax, then this would be something I would analyze for my dissertation. Yup Adam, I’d be using bell hooks and Patricia Hill Collins for that.

  11. xmabaitx Says:

Wow. As if today’s Thankstaking”festivities” didn’t already put me in a foul mood, now my angermeter just went from irritated to freaking pissed.

  12. Mo Says:

The more I read about PETAs antics, the less I understand how anybody could justify their blatant racism, sexism and sizeism. Fuck PETA.

I sincerely hope that no woman of color would agree to this after the KKK bullshit that happened earlier this year.

  13. *** Says:

i think we should all boycott peta in every way. its shameful. and useless too. i mean, come on, you think those ads with naked women in them would actually do something for the animals, or even convince someone to go veg? at the most, some man would masturbate at those pics. its like a disguised semi-porn industry. i also read this organization killed thousands animals.

  14. Has anyone seen this journal article in “Ethics and the Environment”? Here is the abstract. I have access to the pdf if you would like it, just let me know:

Title: Disturbing Images: Peta and the Feminist Ethics of Animal Advocacy
    Author: Maneesha Deckha

Abstract “The author applies a feminist analysis to animal advocacy initiatives in which gendered and racialized representations of female sexuality are paramount. Feminists have criticized animal advocates for opposing the oppression of nonhuman animals through media images that perpetuate female objectification. These critiques are considered through a close examination of two prominent campaigns by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). The author argues that some representations of female sexuality may align with a posthumanist feminist ethic and need not be read as sexist. Examining PETA’s famous anti-fur ads and the more recent Milk Gone Wild campaign, the author identifies where PETA’s campaigns are objectionable under a feminist ethic and where they are subversive of an anthropocentric and male-dominated order alike. The article thus recuperates part of PETA’s work from feminist critiques, but also reveals the constructions posthumanist advocacy should exclude to avoid elevating the status of nonhuman animals at the expense of women.”

  15. I really liked this excerpt from the journal article:

“The Gentlemen Prefer Fur-Free Blondes ad featuring Anna Nicole Smith (Figure 6) does this explicitly, while the other ads do this implicitly by featuring model bodies that uphold a standard of bodily “perfection,” including the perfection of whiteness that relies on extensive regimes of disciplining one’s body. Indeed, racial logics are critical to PETA’s campaigns insofar as they seek to underscore the innocence of animals by [End Page 50] choosing white bunnies and featuring them with young and white bodies (see Figure 8). As bell hooks (1992, 61–77) has noted, it is whiteness and white women’s bodies which remain the repository of innocence while Black women, for example, are permitted sexual representation, even agency, only as “fallen women” inhabiting sites of animality and lust”.

  16. adam Says:

    Breeze,
Here’s a related article that came out in the first issue of Humanimalia (Volume 1, Number 1 – September 2009):
““Hooters for Neuters”: Sexist or Transgressive Animal Advocacy Campaign?”
-It’s mostly on the issue of gender, but it briefly discusses the “Pimp Your Pit” campaign.
